Ireland is gearing up to deliver its first huge GDPR decision

The Data Protection Commission is reportedly about to deliver its first major General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) decision. Well, kind of.

The country’s lead regulator Helen Dixon told the Irish Independent that she expects that her first major decision will be about WhatsApp. “I expect that file to land on my desk in the next fortnight,” she said.

However, don’t hold your breath for the final decision as Dixon warned that it could take months before the decision is reached.

The WhatsApp investigation is examining whether WhatsApp has “discharged its GDPR transparency obligations with regard to the provision of information and the transparency of that information to both users and non-users of WhatsApp’s services, including information provided to data subjects about the processing of information between WhatsApp and other Facebook companies”, according to the DPC’s office.

In related news, WhatsApp is currently being reviewed in India to see if its planned payments service is compliant with the country’s laws.
