Finnish Telia and OP Bank enabled customers to buy frosty treats with just an icy stare

OP Bank and Telia have trialled their new facial recognition payment service with an ice cream van.

The Pivo Face Payment service was tested recently at an ice cream truck in the Finnish town Vallila. Customers could step up to the truck, make their selection of and then show their face to a camera on a tablet. The software then used the camera to compare the customer’s face to a biometric template.

Janne Koistinen, head of Telia Finland’s 5G programme, said, “Facial payment is a good example of a service that benefits from the capacity increase and lower latency of 5G. 5G will also take the security of mobile connections to the next level, which is interesting for example for payment and other financial services.”

Kristian Luoma, head of OP Lab, OP Bank’s innovation arm, said, “Besides security, a smooth user experience is important for customers. 5G makes the service faster and is therefore the perfect partner for Pivo Face Payment. We believe that the trial with Telia opens a new window to the future.”
