PayPal suspends Ku Klux Klan fundraising account

Payment platform PayPal has removed an account used by the Ku Klux Klan to raise money.

The donation account was first flagged by an anti-bigotry campaigner from the internet-based group Sleeping Giants on August 24, the BBC reported. PayPal removed the account six days later.

“I have tonnes of concerns that PayPal is not able to act quickly and decisively on hate groups,” Nandini Jammi, the campaigner, told BBC News.

PayPal responded to the BBC’s story by saying it would not comment on individual cases. The company has previously pledged to evaluate all sites linked to the KKK and other hate groups.

In a statement, PayPal said, “We carefully review accounts to ensure our services are used in line with our acceptable use policy and take action as appropriate.

“We do not allow PayPal services to be used to promote hate, violence, or other forms of intolerance that are discriminatory.”

The account found by Jammi was promoted by the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan via a donation page on its website. The PayPal account did not specifically reference the KKK but said its purpose was to give a “donation blessing for the cause”.

The money would reportedly be used for postage of newsletters and other materials to its supporters and to organize public rallies.
