American Express informs customers of internal data breach

American Express has informed a number of its customers their personal information has been breached after a fraudulent attack.

In a letter to those affected, the credit card company stated personal information had been accessed by one of their employees which was attempting to commit fraud, such as opening accounts at other financial institutions.

The list does not indicate the scale of the data breach.

As a response to this, American Express has launched an investigation into events and is working with law enforcement agencies to support the case.

Details leaked include names, current and previously issued American Express Card account numbers, physical and billing addresses, date of births, and social security numbers.

The credit card company will be monitoring the affected accounts for signs of fraud, but if a cardholder notices any fraudulent charges, they should inform the firm.

As compensation for this incident, the company has given the affected players a complimentary two-year membership to Experian IdentityWorks. This is a service designed to identify misuse of personal information and give identity protection services.

If a cardholder does believe there has been fraudulent activity, they can contact an Experian agent to help resolve the case.
