McDonald’s self-ordering kiosks have one huge payment flaw

The home of the Big Mac has run into a big problem with its self-ordering kiosks: people cannot use them to pay for their food.

Or, to clarify, they are unable to pay with cash through them. While this might seem as a small problem in places that are increasingly moving towards a cashless society, McDonald’s has found that this could become a problem for the 40% to 60% of its US customers that would rather pay with physical money, according to a Bloomberg report.

For instance, in the US, 6.5% of US households neither have a credit nor a debit card, according to the report.

Fast-food franchisees fearing that they will miss out on custom because of the new kiosks could get the option of retrofitting their self-checkout kiosks with a physical cash payment option as McDonald’s is reportedly testing this solution in a small number of US stores.
