Travelex customers left furious as virus discovery cripples the exchange company’s services

The discovery of a malware program has forced foreign exchange company Travelex to suspend some of its services and customers are not happy about it.

The suspension of its services began on December 31 after the company discovered a non-defined virus. This left the company’s customers unable to transfer money via Travelex’s website or app, according to SC Magazine. Manual services were still available.

The company has issued a statement on Twitter saying it is tirelessly trying to solve the situation and eliminate the threat of the virus.

“We apologise to all our customers for any inconvenience caused as a result,” Travelex’s statement continued. “We are doing all we can to restore our full services as soon as possible. Please DM any queries so that we can try too help resolve any issues as quickly as possible.”

Customers quickly took to Twitter to vent their frustration over the service outage.

“This is just not good enough,” tweeted one. “No updates and your website just has a server error page. I think you haven’t told the customers the full story. Just come clean. Ransomware perhaps? When you are back on-line I am getting all my money off my travelcard. Appaling [sic] customer service.

Another customer told Travelex that they had been stuck in a different country without access to money for days due to the company’s failure to provide its services.

“Shame on you!” a third wrote. “People are stranded and now wondering how much of our info has been compromised!”

Travelex replied to that last tweet, “As a precautionary measure in order to protect data and prevent the spread of the virus, we immediately took all our systems offline. Our investigation to date shows no indication that any personal or customer data has been compromised.”
