Payment & Remittances has been the most well-funded subsector in the Netherlands since 2015

FinTech companies in the Netherlands have received over $838.4m in funding across 108 transactions since 2015. Reuters Labs ranked the country as one of the top five FinTech hubs worldwide, with the country actively encouraging R&D efforts and supporting FinTech startups. Government authorities and associations such as Holland FinTech are working to ensure startups, financial services, and entrepreneurs have access to the necessary information, infrastructure and support needed for the FinTech market to thrive.

Payments & Remittances companies have attracted the largest portion of funding in the Netherlands capturing 29.3% of investment amounting to $245.6m. AfterPay, a specialist in post-payment services, raised $117m in a Post-IPO Equity round in August 2018. The company stated that the funding will be used to continue its expansion into the US. This is the largest recorded FinTech deal in the Netherlands to date.

InsurTech is the second most well-funded subsector in the Netherlands accounting for 13% of capital raised in the country. Its share of deal activity has drastically increased from 3% in 2015 to 15.4% in 2019. The country has seen a shift in how InsurTech is perceived from being a disrupting force in the market to a transformative tool in improving quality of insurers’ operations. According to PwC, insurance companies have increased investment into technologies to improve client engagement and have access to more accurate risk insights.

The Other category includes companies in WealthTech, Real Estate, RegTech, Data & Analytics, and Funding Platform collectively accounting to 16.6% of total funding since 2015.
