Cyber criminals put more focus on mobile attacks

Cybercriminals are moving away from desktop attacks and targeting mobile devices, according to a new report from LexisNexis.

A new study from LexisNexis Risk Solutions found that will attack rates targeting desktop transactions and mobile transactions are similar, at %2.7% and 2.5%, respectively, the mobile attack rate grew by 56%. Whereas the desktop attack rate fell by 23%.

Mobile apps are also becoming much more at risk from attacks. The research claims mobile browser transactions witnessed a higher rate in 2019, with 4.2% of incidents, while app transactions only accounted for 1.9% of attacks. Despite this, attacks on mobile app transactions grew by 171% while it only increased by 14% for browsers.

Another key finding of the report was that fraudsters are operating as a global network. It claims that 73,000 devices which were associated with an attack in one organisation were then later found to all be involved in an attack in a different enterprise.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions director of fraud and identity Rebekah Moody said, “The ability to harness intelligence related to devices, location, identity and behaviour to combat fraud is critical, given the globally connected fraud that permeates the global digital economy.

“Today, fraudsters are able to attack with unprecedented ease and speed and it is not enough for businesses to focus their fraud mitigation efforts on individual attacks. To mitigate the hyperconnected nature of global cybercrime, businesses need access to a shared view of risk that can operate across channels, across industries and across country borders.
