Cybercriminals tried to hack their way inside the World Health Organization (WHO) earlier in March as the number of digital attacks are on the rise.
The news were revealed by sources talking with Reuters, Business Insider reported. The hackers were unsuccessful in their attempts.
While the WHO’s chief information security officer Flavio Aggio said the identity of the hackers was unclear, he warned that the number of hack attacks where criminals attempt to leverage the coronavirus has been on the rise.
As RegTech Analyst has previously reported, both governmental and private actors have warned about this trend over the last few weeks.
The attack was first noticed by a security expert who identified a fake website that mimicked the WHO’s internal email system.
The WHO later confirmed that the site had been set up in an attempt to try to steal people’s passwords.
Even though the identity of the criminals behind the attack is still unclear, several sources suggested that it might the be the hacker group DarkHotel.
