AI-powered claims solution developer Tractable forms partnership with second Japanese insurer

Tractable will deploy its AI technology into Japanese insurance giant MS&AD to help it accelerate its auto claims processes, as part of a new deal.

MS&AD will use the AI across both of its subsidiaries, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (MSI) and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance (ADI), to accelerate hundreds of thousands of auto claims each year. It will help speed up workflows by as much as two weeks per claim.

The insurer believes it will help its adjusters save as much as 360,000 hours of time each year.

The AI technology uses computer vision to analyse photos of car damage in near-real-time, enabling the insurer to understand the extent of the damage remotely.

Tractable’s AI has been trained on photos and human repair decisions across millions of historical accidents. The technology is able to understand damage to any passenger vehicle across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

MSI GM for technical support, claims division Keiji Goto said, “By applying Tractable’s market-leading AI, we will be able to solve long-standing challenges to the claims cycle, such as how to accelerate supervisor approval of work carried out by our appraisers. We’re excited by the standard of the AI and its capacity to help us make better, faster decisions for our customers.”

In addition to Japan, MS&AD operates across 40 countries spread throughout Asia, the Americas and Europe.

In auto insurance claims, time is frequently lost scheduling visual appraisals of the damage, which may occur multiple times throughout the claim. By capturing images with AI and converting them into instant appraisals, Tractable’s AI allows the insurer and repairer to move claims forward immediately, accelerating the process by as much as two weeks. For its adjusters, MS&AD believes the advance will save as much as 360,000 hours of time every year.

Tractable co-founder and CEO Alex Dalyac said, “It’s inspiring that one of the world’s leading insurers is making a bold move into the future with Tractable. By deploying our AI across Japan, MS&AD will enable its policyholders to benefit immediately from cutting-edge technology that shortens the claims cycle by weeks.”

MS&AD, which is the fifth-largest P&C insurer globally, is the second Japanese insurance firm to utilise Tractable for claims support.

Tractable recently formed a similar deal with Tokio Marine, which is using the AI tools to improve its claims. The insurer also leverages Tractable’s Loss Adjuster Application to set its own QA checks for repairs to ensure they meet specific standards.

The InsurTech company has been on a spree of partnerships. It also recently formalised an agreement with Spanish insurer Admiral Seguros, which claims to be the first insurer in the country to use an AI tool to assess vehicle damage.

Tractable’s AI has helped to process more than $1bn in auto claims. Its clients include Ageas UK, Covéa and Talanx-Warta.
