Drake has been signed on as an investor and collaborator with Los Angeles-based sustainability and financial services startup Aspiration.
The rapper joins celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio, Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber and Orlando Bloom in investing in Aspiration.
Drake’s partnership goes beyond financial backing. He will use Aspiration’s personal and enterprise services to monitor and cut down his own carbon footprint with the aim to make his personal life carbon neutral.
Aspiration co-founder Joe Sanberg said his team is working with the Certified Lover Boy — whose environmental footprint is larger than the average person’s, given the star’s frequent travel and Hollywood lifestyle — to cut down his environmental footprint. Following an audit of the artist’s schedule, it will calculate his carbon footprint and use its reforestation program to offset the estimated climate impact.
Aspiration offers environmentally-focused financial services, positioning itself as a sustainable alternative to other banks and FinTech companies because it doesn’t invest in fossil fuel companies or non-sustainable endeavours. It helps customers to keep their deposits out of fossil fuels, automatically plant trees with their card purchases, and track business and personal Planet & People impact scores as they shop.
Aspiration has a credit card with an option to round up every customers’ purchase to the nearest dollar to go towards planting trees. Aspiration currently has five million users and has planted 15 million trees from its users’ financial activity.
In a statement, Drake said he is excited to partner with a “company that’s found a simple way to offer everyone the ability to reduce their carbon footprint,” and that “Aspiration’s approach to climate change is really inspiring and I hope together we can help to motivate and create awareness.”
Commenting on the new collaboration with Drake, Sandberg said, “When it comes to the future of sustainable living, Drake isn’t just ahead of the curve — he defines the curve. When we discussed eradicating his carbon footprint, Drake‘s priority was ensuring fans could do the same. With Aspiration, they can.”
