US White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has warned the Russian government that the US will take action against cybercriminal groups if the Russian government fails to do so.
According to Bleeping Computer, Psaki added that the recent REvil ransomware attack of IT provider Kaseya – being labelled as one of the largest cyberattacks in history – has not yet been attributed to anyone, and specifically not to the Russian government.
Psaki also noted that high-level US and Russian officials will meet next week to address the recent attacks that have targeted US organisations over 2021.
She said, “We have undertaken expert-level talks that are continuing. We expect to have another meeting next week focused on ransomware attacks.
As President [Biden] made clear to President Putin when they met, if the Russian government cannot or will not take action against criminal actors residing in Russia, we will take action or reserve the right to take action on our own.
“Now, in this case, the intelligence community has not yet attributed the attack. The cybersecurity community agrees that REvil operates out of Russia with affiliates around the world.”
Last month, the G7 called on Russia to take stronger action on ransomware attacks and cybercrime that has occurred within their borders.
