FCC chair calls for new policies around telecom data breach reporting

The chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Jessica Rosenworcel has called for new policies around telecom providers’ reporting of data breaches.

According to Security Week, the updated rules would mean telecommunications carriers would no longer have to wait seven days before starting to notify customers of a breach, with telecom services providers required to notify those affected by unintentional breaches.

Furthermore, carriers would be mandated to report data breaches not only to the FBI and the US Secret Service, but also to the FCC.

The FCC has noted it aims to better target cybersecurity threats and boost consumer protection, while also ensuring federal authorities and the FCC itself are informed of incidents as soon as possible.

Rosenworcel stated in a note, “Current law already requires telecommunications carriers to protect the privacy and security of sensitive customer information. But these rules need updating to fully reflect the evolving nature of data breaches and the real-time threat they pose to affected consumers.”
