UK deal activity soars in 2021, nearly doubling to 729 transactions

UK deal activity has seen a strong uptrend from 2017 to 2021 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.4%. Investment in the UK has been driven by deals over £100m with some of the biggest deals occurring in Q4 2021 such as Capital on Tap (£450m), Prodigy Finance (£361m) and Monzo (£360m). London sees the bulk of FinTech deals but there are signs that tech hubs outside the capital are becoming more attractive opportunities. Deals from 2020-2021 in London grew 323% from 178 to 575 whilst deal activity outside of London rose 467% from 33 to 154. Factors contributing to the success of FinTech hubs were suggested in the Kalifa review and include proximity to financial services and technology domain expertise, academia and investment.
