Coinbase Ventures stands out as the most active Blockchain & Crypto investor in Europe

  • Coinbase Ventures, which invests in early-stage cryptocurrency and blockchain startups, was the most active Blockchain & Crypto investor in Europe in 2021 with nine in total. This may be short lived with Coinbase Ventures stating “We will note that we’re starting to see signs of a slowdown, particularly with later stage investments, that will likely be visible in our Q2 2022 activity.”
  • Interestingly Coinbase Ventures does not have a dedicated fund for its investments but instead takes capital directly from their balance sheet. The high number of investments and low number of staff also means that they prefer to join funding rounds led by other VCs and not take board seats.
  • Blockchain & Crypto deal activity in Europe grew 41% in 2021 from 2020 setting new records for the region. Investment in the region also grew more than seven-fold to a total of $6bn in 2021.
