WealthTech apps dominate German app stores in 2022

  • WealthTech apps are the most downloaded FinTech services in Germany so far this year and account for six out of the top ten apps on the list as of 10th Online banking has taken over traditionally banking methods in the country with 73% of the population using the service, while 58% handle their banking primarily via a smartphone app, 50% use a tablet app.
  • PayPal, an online payments system based in the US, was the most downloaded FinTech app in Germany with 3.77m downloads. PayPal has been downloaded over 21m times in Germany in total which is one in four Germans, (Germany’s population is 83m) showing how prevalent the company is in Germany’s financial ecosystem.
  • Intrestingly N26, a German neobank, which is the most well-funded FinTech company in Germany and describes itself as “The Mobile Bank” didn’t feature on the top 10 most downloaded German FinTech apps in 2022 with total downloads at 140k as of 10th N26 may have grown too fast too soon as the company has had issues including money laundering allegations and failed attempts to expand it services for example withdrawing from the US in January 2022.
