Sompo to deploy Greater Than’s AI for greener driving

Japanese insurance provider Sompo Japan has teamed up with InsurTech Greater Than, a global provider of DriverDNA for real-time insurance and predictive risk insights, to develop a carbon neutrality service in the auto insurance industry.

Greater Than is an AI data analytics company that predicts accident probability and CO2 impact per driver in real-time. The company said it is revolutionising auto insurance pricing and new business solutions for the automotive, new mobility and fleet industries.

The two companies have demonstrated an in-house proof of concept (PoC), with the aim of developing a service to help businesses support a more sustainable future.

The in-house demonstration experiment confirmed a corelation between safe driving and greenhouse gases (GHGs).

The platform, the companies said, will aim to reduce traffic accidents by promoting safe driving and reduce GHGs from car usage. Using Greater Than AI technology, it will measure and visualise CO2 emissions for vehicles and calculate an index of safe driving from data such as sudden braking and other driving behaviours.

Greater Than said the service will start in a limited area in December this year, will plans to roll it out nationwide in March 2023.

Mr. Shinya Nakagawa, global director for automotive & new mobility at Greater Than, said, ?We’re pleased to work with Sompo Japan in developing new service integrated with mobility & CO2 analysis beyond insurance. The mobility in Japan is under transformation, and Sompo Japan is at the forefront of making eco-friendly driving center-court.p>

Mr. Masamitsu Harada, manager personal lines product development department at Sompo, added, ?Testing and evaluating Greater Than’s real-time risk and eco score analysis during this spring has given us great insight into developing new services that we will offer to our clients in the near future.p>

Greater Than first launched its AI-based platform, which caters to all types of cars, auto insurers, fleets, and car manufacturers, in 2020. Last year, it deepened its relationship with Zurich through an agreement with Onto, a UK-based electric ca subscription service.
